John grew up in Grand Forks and is a graduate of the University of North Dakota with a degree in physics. His career path changed after he started farming near Thompson, North Dakota during his college years. Following graduation and with an increasing interest in agriculture, John joined his father’s company – Botsford & Rice (since 1946). In addition to its traditional business lines of farm real estate sales, farm management, and ag appraisals, John pioneered the first trading platform for agricultural co-op stock sales by creating a secondary marketplace for trading American Crystal Sugar Co. stock. Botsford & Rice was acquired by Alerus Financial in 1998 and later became Botsford & Qualey Land Company.

Starting Red River Land Company in 2009 along the same business lines, he continues to work with landowners, operators, and sugar beet stock transactions. He has over 40 years of experience in the land sales, management, and appraisal business. John is a licensed real estate broker in ND & MN, and is also a Certified General Real Property Appraiser and an Accredited Rural Appraiser (ARA) with the American Society of Farm Managers & Rural Appraisers (inactive status). He has vast experience in the valuation of farmland in a three state region.

From the initial assistance in the valuation process for a landowner, through the sale of the property and closing, John has the ideal background to provide you with the professional experience required to ensure the sale of your land receives the attention it deserves and delivers the results you expect. His reputation and connections to farmers, landowners, business leaders and professionals offers a unique set of skills to clients.

John and his wife, Dawn, have one son, who is a physician in Minneapolis.

Our History

In 1946, Vernon Botsford started a farm management business to assist landowners in managing and caring for their land. That same determination and commitment that helped him spearhead this new venture remains at the cornerstone of Red River Land Company today. In 1954, Botsford & Rice was formed and in 1977, Vernon’s son, John, joined the business.  The company added the agricultural co-op stock brokerage business in 1994 as John pioneered the development of the first trading platform for agricultural co-op stock sales.  This revolutionized the way beet stock is transferred and sold to this day. Botsford & Rice Inc. was acquired by Alerus Financial in 1998. In 2009, John started Red River Land Company which focused on farm real estate sales, farm management services and sugar beet stock sales.

Chris Griffin began working with John in 2011 and took over as President of Red River Land Company in 2018. John, with his many years of knowledge and expertise, continues to work with the company as Vice President.  Nick joined the company in 2020.
